How many times have you talked with a person at a networking event, and you didn’t know what to ask them next?
Well in this post I am going to provide you three questions you can use to help overcome that challenge. These three questions provide you great starting points for follow up questions as the conversation builds with the other person!
I use these questions all the time when meeting new people. They haven’t steered me wrong yet!
1) What do you do?
This is the typical question everyone asks at a networking event. It is important that you have an elevator pitch to answer this question that clearly states what you do, and how it will add value the other person.
When you ask this question, listen carefully because the other person’s answer will create great opportunities for follow up questions (see below).
2) How Long Have You Done It?
This question will give you an idea about how long the person has been doing their particular line of work. This is a great follow up question to “What do you do?” because it helps you paint a better picture about the person.
3) What Did You Do Before?
By understanding what the person did before, it gives you more of an understanding about their background, which may even create other opportunities for you if their current line of work doesn’t directly add value to your business.
Great Follow Up Questions To Any Of The Three Main Questions
What got you interested in this line of work?
Who is your ideal client?
What do you like most about what you do?
What do you like to do outside of work…what are you passionate about?
What made you transition from profession 1 to profession 2…what inspired the switch?
How can I help you?
People love to talk about themselves, and when you give them an opportunity and an open platform to do so, some amazing things can happen.
You never know, the next person you meet at a networking event, and with using these questions may lead you to your to landing first multi-million dollar deal!
